Ode to the Pencil

Posted in studio 1a_2010 by jrhorvath on 14 March 2010

Here is a poem I wrote after my pen exploded. Enjoy.
Ode to the pencil, too easily forgot.
Ode to the pencil, sharpened or not.

We praised your brother, mightier than the sword.
We praised a straightedge, titled him ruler or lord.

But did we praise you? Oh wooden one.
But did we praise you? When our work was done.

You gave us our sketches, our erasable words.
You gave us our scantron, and befriended our nerds.

You never exploded or ran out of ink.
You never were permanent when we forgot how to think.

You even sacrificed your body of lead
You even let us sharpen your wooden head

And while we were forcing you into spinning blades,
And while you watched your own letters fade,

Never once did you refuse to write
Never once did you unleash your might

So ode to the pencil, a good solid tool.
Ode to the pencil, may he always be cool.
