Dinner Friday!

Posted in events by jhebert1 on 13 April 2010

Hey everyone,

You are all invited to a dinner friday with our bay and Karen’s after our exam (around 5 or 6).

It will be at a restaurant in the market, I’ve been before and its very nice and cheap, great food.

Please let everyone know since I don’t have everyone’s number and R.S.V.P. because I have to make reservations.

Thanks, I know its last minute but I think we’ll have a lot of fun!

Piano Stairs

Architecture can truly have an impact on the individual’s experience through a building. It can also be an incentive to stay fit by taking the stairs… Check it out:

You know you’re an architecture student when…

Posted in studio 1a_2010 by Sarah Gelbard on 2 April 2010

…you know the janitors by name.

…your roommates say “good morning,” and you reply “good night.”

…you carry a toothbrush in your backpack.

…someone asks you for your phone number and you give them the studios.

…you start paying rent for your desk space in studio.

…You total up 3 meals of the day to your breakfast.

…’Red Bull’ is you favorite drink.

…all of the Christmas gifts you give are wrapped in trace.

…you ask Santa Clause for architecture supplies.

… the list keeps on going

(Unfortunately I have no idea where this came from originally.  It gets circulated virally by email every couple of terms.)

Noel Kerns – illuminated architecture

Posted in artists and architects by Sarah Gelbard on 2 April 2010

Noel Kerns is a Dallas photographer who risks life and limb finding derelict structures, crawling inside, illuminating them with small gelled lights and photographing them. The images that result have a stillness that says something about decay and the passage of time, but (thanks to the long exposures he often uses) a hint of life in the streaking contrails of stars and headlights flashing past on nearby interstates. They’re unsettling, and very beautiful. (Flickr)

Stepping Back

I’m sure all of you are contemplating all the comments given from the crits yesterday.
As you back track through all your ideas, it is a good idea to go back to the basics: What are the experiential qualities of my design?

I suggest taking a break from studio, sit outside in the nice weather, and read through An Architecture of the Seven Senses by Juhani Pallasmaa.
It is not long, and you can definitely finish it in one afternoon.
His text is a good way of revisiting how each sense informs architecture, which is the focus of most, if not all, of your projects.
You can then use it to carefully structure your arguments for your final presentation.

Since a lot of us used watercolours for our hybrids, I thought this might be relevant for future explorations with the same media.

This is only a couple of them, there are more beautiful paintings in that link!
